About Birkana
Birkana is a creative workshop in Saltbæk, where we gather people about craftsmanship, creative joy and community. In our cozy barn, we offer creative workshops that only your imagination limits. Here is room for both beginners and practitioners who want to explore new techniques and immerse themselves in creative projects. Our mission is to create a vibrant focal point where creativity flourishes and where everyone can find inspiration and community. Below you can read more about us and our history, about why we made this place.
**Who are we? **
Behind Birkana stand Ida Sofie Skipper Massesson and Jane Massesson, mother and daughter who share a passion for creating and disseminating crafts. We both have a background in the creative world, but chose to go down the path of pedagogy and have been working on it before we started this.
Our goal is to make Saltbæk a vibrant, creative gathering point and give people the opportunity to immerse themselves in something creative together with others. Something that we have always enjoyed having together and that is why we want to share this experience with others.
In an age when our everyday lives are filled with digital possibilities, we believe in the value of returning to the more simple and basic forms of creativity. There's something special about creating with your hands — feeling the material, immersing yourself in the process and seeing something take shape from scratch. It gives a sense of pride, presence and tranquility.
Right from the beginning
In 2023, we fell in love with a small village outside Kalundborg and took the leap from Greater Copenhagen to the open countryside of Saltbæk.
We bought a farm with lots of space, and here we now live as two families — Ida and Simon in the main house, while Ida's parents, Jane and Jan, live in one of the longerows.
Jane and Jan have been working with pottery for many years, and with the large workshop on the farm, it made sense to create a place where creativity and community could flourish.
Birkana started with a vision to create a place where we could work creatively together and at the same time be more at home with the family. But the dream does not stop here!
Our plans are to gradually expand the workshop with small cabins for rent, wilderness bath, sauna and more experiences, so that even more people can come and experience the amazing little shack we now call home.
